open invitation no. 18: lists

Make a list.

When I’m not sure I have the capability to write, I make a list. Lists are low-pressure. Lists are forgiving. Lists are acceptable.

List of Lists to Write

  • Current Favorites
  • Gratitude List
  • This I Know
  • Things I Wonder
  • Recent Small Moments

List Tips

  • Be specific…write the tiny details.
  • Don’t worry about the order.
  • Italicize. And then write a little more before moving to the next item.
  • Tell yourself a list is a worthy thing to write.

Be a little “listy,” and you will find the joy that comes from writing is right there waiting for you (even when it feels like writing is too much to do).

    1. The love for your daughter is plain to see. Such a delight. – Love the line: Last month when we visited her new apartment, she agreed that we could gift her a bowl, a kettle, and a frying pan to add to her one pot, two plates and two tea cups. Vivid objects, exceptional love.

  1. Oh, I love lists, and I love these suggestions for making them.
Our summer is ending predictably…an anticlimax that brings us to books.

      2. There is such power in words and in the stories we choose to tell with them. They take you out of your stomachache, out of your disappointment, out of your worry. – SO TRUE – and who knew Weird Al had a book! Love this post!

    1. Loved your list! This one stood out to me most: Why is it so simple to think of something to write when you’re not near a computer, phone or piece of paper? And when it’s actually time to sit down and write, those thoughts are long gone. AND the hubby and the pillowcase one! That made me smile. My husband has the same trouble with pillowcases!

    1. Love this! Connected with it immediately. Whenever anything anywhere is out of place – I have an intense need to make it right – put it back – make things whole again. I never connected it with closure, but of course that’s it! I’m seeking – like all of us humans – to have healing to have closure in whatever form it takes. Thank you.

    1. Thank you for the lovely poems – the found Alvarez poem is so haunting – Taking sips of sorrow – I think of life like that – taking sips of sorrow in measured doses and then finding ways to drink in joy.
