open invitation no. 37: routines

Open your blog. Write.

The day is made up of routines. Whether intentional or not, each day has a rhythm and those rhythms are built through routines. I’ve come to believe that cues are the best ways to set routines in motion. A cue is a signal for something to happen.

I read scripture and write every morning. It’s because I have a cue of drinking the best cup of coffee to begin the day. I pour coffee. I open my bible. I write in my notebook.

I go for a walk each day because I have a cue of dropping the boys off at school. I pull out of the parking lot and drive to the park. I open the door for Luna and she waits while I pull on my hat and gloves. Then we walk.

I cook dinner most nights because I have a cue of shutting down my computer and turning on music. The music plays and I chop or sauté or mix.

If we want to be people who write and share our stories, then we must attune to a cue. Perhaps it is this invitation. Let it be your cue. Open your blog and write.

*Remember, you don’t have to accept this invitation…but I do hope you will accept the invitation to write. Sharing our stories is magical.

      1. I keep trying to watch and listen for new ways for them to express themselves. I want their creativity to flourish even though their movement and interactions are limited in a socially distant classroom.

    1. Oh this is so honest, such strong writing:

What if there was a moment in my life when I made a decision that freed me? What if that one moment allowed me to speak truth into my life, but then affected the lives of everyone I love? What if my finest moment tore apart a family?

      PLEASE CONTINUE…

    2. lovely sharing. I wonder … what if you finest moment was a blessing to others … bringing them together instead of tearing them apart … teaching them something … bringing them joy …

    1. Yes – you got to the heart of it –

Today was a gift. It was short, just thirty minutes, but a gift nonetheless.

I have found that those small moments – those brief gifts keep me afloat and carry me on.

It just takes one person, doesn’t it?

    1. Terje –

Please keep writing. Your voice is strong and needs to be heard. I loved your lines:

A third one chose to be a queen. She boldly said, “Why should I be any less than a queen in my own story?” Was my choice of fairy adding to my story of being invisible? How can I change my story? How can I use my new story to change me and my life? What kind of a hero do I wish to be in my life story? How to be brave and visible? What would the best version of me look like?

AND I would love to share a cup of tea and a slice toast with orange-pumpkin-rose pepper-jam with you! That sounds simply marvelous!

  1. It seems through these times we are in, with everything so changed, routines have been hard to maintain, yet they do keep us grounded. School has been in constant upheaval… fully remote, then hybrid, then remote again. For me, thinking of retiring… thinking too bad I didn’t before this year! Thinking do I want THIS year to be the last one? But one thing about teaching that remains constant… sweet moments happen, and keep us going.
