open invitation no. 39: word

Write off of a word.

It is popular to select One Little Word in lieu of a resolution. Maybe you kept a word close during 2020. Maybe you didn’t. Perhaps you are thinking of One Little Word for 2021. Perhaps you aren’t.

The prompt today, if you are looking for inspiration, is to select a word and write about it. See where it leads you. As we know, because we are writers, words are magical.

*Remember, you don’t have to accept this invitation…but I do hope you will accept the invitation to write. Sharing our stories is magical.

    1. This, dear Magic Human, is remarkable, and your writing strikes a chord. We DO have choices, and reclamation is so important. With retrospection comes growth – comes intentionality – comes understanding. #MakeRoomForJoy

    2. Fran – I loved: Be aware of the great gulf between data that’s visible and the stories of human children, not so visible. Push back all that encroaches on growing the children, that which would inhibit their love of learning. Reclaim that for them. Know them and their families and their stories. Know your colleagues and their stories.

Yes, yes, yes! And also – As the page turns from 2020 to 2021, we’ll see where life leads. It may be in charge of the story, but we are in charge of the craftsmanship. – I need a t-shirt with that saying on it!

      Happy NEW Year!

      1. Thank you ❤ – that line about life being in charge of the story/we're in charge of the craftsmanship is one of my favorites – delights me that you picked up on it & envision it on a shirt!

    1. That’s a comment that sticks with you! I appreciate how you’ve been reflecting about what this student meant and considering how best to open up a conversation to learn more.

      1. Hi Rose,
I miss you! This child made me question whether things are too hard or whether hard is just part of learning. I can’t wait to learn more. Happy New Year!

    2. Such an interesting post. I like your questions at the end, especially – What are your thoughts about “hard”? Is this something you enjoy, is it stressful, or is it something else entirely?

It’s always a process finding the right amount of hard in learning – hard that is challenging, but not overwhelming. It is a dance I do every day with my students. Eventually, I hope they will view learning as an adventure – sometimes hard – but always rewarding.

      1. That is what I am questioning – Is hard always a bad thing or is it something kids need to experience and see that it is a part of learning. I can’t wait to talk with him more to hear his thoughts.

    1. Such a powerful post! This line hit me: to prune parts of my life that sucked my emotional energy. Yes – I’ve been there too! Here’s to 2021 and beyond – and FIRMNESS OF PURPOSE! Happy, healthy, inspired New Year!

    1. I like how you structured this with the repetitive “in my mind” and then moving us into the reality of your present experience. I also got a kick out of your relationship with your husband and his understanding of your need for a photo. Happy skiing!

    2. LOVE THIS – Nanc! Open mindset – skiing in your 60’s! I’m an ice skater but the rinks are closed, so my husband bought me roller blades that mimic ice skates! Been out twice on an outdoor roller hockey rink. So much fun and so terrifying at the same time! Loved this post and the pictures and your humor and your love for you husband! Happy New Year!

    1. LEAVE THE LIGHT ON FOR BEAUTY! So love this! Your post was so insightful. Especially loved:

I am grateful for the blank page where I show up to write every morning like a runner at the mark. I move through paces with words and spaces, the said and the unsaid running side by side. On the page, I live the good moments twice.

Thank you! Happy New Year – 2021!

    1. Oh my goodness! I was thinking yesterday that I had to contact you and ask you for book recommendations because I just blew three Emily P. Freeman books and I need another author to explore. THANK YOU!
