open invitation no. 40: write

It’s okay if you don’t know what to think.

Sometimes writers don’t know what they think. Sometimes writers don’t know what to feel. There are lots of emotions and lots of confusing things that happen in the world. This is a reminder that it’s okay to write, even when you don’t know what to think.

*Remember, you don’t have to accept this invitation…but I do hope you will accept the invitation to write. Sharing our stories is magical.

    1. OMG! I loved every word of your post! You made me cry. On my birthday every year I read the chapter in Winnie the Pooh – In Which Eeyore has a Birthday and Gets Two Presents. It embodies my Eeyore personality.

Just loved your line: When I was forced to “close” my eyes to the flaws, true celebration commenced.

WOW – I am so glad your students have you in their worlds. So POWERFUL. Thank you for giving me HOPE this week.

    1. Just love your posts, Julie. YOU are an inspiration to me and many others. I am so grateful for your book recommendations. They make me grow, and think, and be a better person. I love that Mary Oliver quote. The one I have on my office wall is: Tell me, what do you plan to do with your one, wild and precious life. I may replace it with this one!

    1. Your line hit home: As you practice acknowledging what scares you, you take its power.

This is such an honest, open, and hopeful post. Thank you for sharing yourself with all of us!

    1. So helpful – those quote about comfort. Whenever I’m feeling lost – I repeat 3 little words: JUST BE HELD.

Thanks for your gentle reminders – God is in control.

    1. DON’T STOP BLOGGING, TERJE! I look forward to reading your stories and ideas. I too watched heart-warming Christmas movies this year. It was a present to myself to just binge watch old movies. Very comforting.

I loved the photo of the writer’s room – it made me smile!

    1. Nanc – Such a CREATIVE post! You had me on the edge of my seat and then the ending – so, so, so what I’ve been searching for this week. THANK YOU!

    1. Fran – WOW! Your poem is so, so powerful. I wrote a poem this week about my feelings for our country, but I was too distraught to post it. Your poem is amazing – perfect. WORD WARFARE – exactly. The sparseness makes it so strong. Thank you for this. It needs to be tweeted and retweeted and made into an anthem!

      1. Thank you so much. I am glad you think this and your words do my heart good today. It is good that you wrote your feelings in a poem; there’s strength and healing for you in that, even if you don’t post… you are your most precious audience. 🙂

    1. I despised Brussels sprouts for most of my life…and then I tried them again, of all places, at an NCTE dinner one year and was amazed at how good they could be. Now I’m eager to experiment with them, and my son says they are one of his favorite foods. Maybe there’s a metaphor in there somewhere.

I love your metaphor for friends and Brussels sprouts! This was so much fun to read.
